Waverly High School students recently welcomed Amy Shaffer, Senior Director of Legal Services and Program Implementation at the Ohio Department of Higher Education and a member of the Waverly City Schools Board of Education, for a career exploration presentation.
Shaffer shared her own path into the legal profession, beginning with her experience in Mock Trial and continuing through her studies in journalism and political science at Miami University and law school at the University of Kansas. She also discussed her current work with the Ohio Department of Higher Education, where she helps implement programs designed to expand access to higher education and workforce training opportunities across the state.
Students learned that careers in law can take many different forms and that the profession often involves research, writing, problem-solving, and communication. Shaffer also encouraged students to think about what matters most to them when choosing a career and reminded them that it is okay for their plans to change along the way.
She closed by emphasizing the importance of everyday professional skills, including being punctual, meeting deadlines, following through, and remaining curious and proactive.
