Waverly High School students had the opportunity to learn about emerging technologies in manufacturing and construction during a presentation from Christopher Gordon of Vitruvian, an Athens, Ohio-based company working with large-scale 3D printing and advanced building technologies.
Gordon introduced students to Vitruvian’s educational and workforce development programs and discussed technologies including the Scorpion 3D construction printing system and Mantis large-format additive manufacturing system.
Students learned how large-scale 3D printing can be used in the construction of homes as well as the production of building components, furniture, and other large objects. The presentation also explored the materials and processes involved, potential benefits of additive manufacturing, and examples of projects Vitruvian has completed.
Vitruvian also discussed educational opportunities that combine online coursework with hands-on training, providing students with a pathway to learn skills associated with advanced manufacturing and construction technology.
The visit gave WHS students a look at how concepts involving design, manufacturing, automation, construction, and 3D printing are being used in real-world applications while introducing them to potential educational and career opportunities in these emerging fields.
