PIKETON, OH – Waverly City School’s Tiny Tigers Science Program is a unique learning course that blends STEM activities and mentorship opportunities by pairing primary students with high schoolers. This year, they will deliver their lessons with support from a $1,000 donation from the Southern Ohio Cleanup Company (SOCCo).
“This unique take on STEM learning is a great way to capture the attention of younger students and get them excited about science, “said Southern Ohio Cleanup Company President and CEO Pat Timbes.
Students from Daniel Sand’s high school science classes lead lessons on everything from making slime to building and launching rockets.
“It’s one of our most anticipated lessons of the year; the high schoolers really take ownership of being a mentor to our younger students,” said Sand.
Each grade from preschool through second grade gets its own Tiny Tigers Day, with high school students placed in each classroom as their teachers.
“It is great to see the older students engage with the little kids, the younger students are learning, and the high school students provide a wonderful example that science and learning are fun,” said Waverly Primary Principal Sarah Ward.
